Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
