Residents encouraged to avoid going out as strong winds batter the region.

Severe gales reaching speeds of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 households experiencing outages and led authorities to call off over 100 air travel services, as reported by regional news sources.

These gusts are influencing the complete southern region and lower areas of the northern region, as stated by the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have announced rare high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in central regions including Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been advised to stay indoors, stay off roads, and prepare for more electricity and network failures.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Response

This outage seems to be impacting residences mainly in the South Island, while authorities report that power was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have stated that in some places structures have suffered roof damage, while utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gales.

Across Wellington, a man was lost his life after being hit by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a woman was swept into approaching vehicles on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was recorded in a widely shared car camera footage.

Flights entering and leaving the city have been halted as a result of the weather, and some roads and libraries are not operating.

At the same time Canterbury officials have declared a state of emergency, to support emergency management operations.

Work Stoppages Alongside Severe Weather

However the extreme weather has compelled them to modify certain arrangements, with various open-air gatherings relocated inside or abandoned.
