Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
But some are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
