The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
